The October 1, 2009, updates to the ICD-9-CM volume 1 and volume 3 code sets have been released via the ICD-9-CM Tabular Addenda and the FY 2010 Final Addenda. An ICD-9-CM code is required for all professional claims and for all institutional claims; however, an ICD-9-CM code is not required for ambulance supplier claims. New procedure codes include: 17.51, 33.73 and 46.87 and new diagnosis codes include: 209.70, 453.50, and V15.52. Two new sections entitled "External Cause Status" (category E000) and "Activity" (categories E001 - E019, E029, and E030) were added to ICD-9-CM volume 1.

To account for the recent emergence of the H1N1 influenza virus, two new codes have been added. "Influenza due to identified avian influenza virus" can now be reported with 488.0 and "influenza due to identified novel H1N1 influenza virus" can be reported with 488.1.

All additions, modifications and deletions effective October 1, 2009, can be found in CCH's Coding Comply product that is available via the CCH Internet Research Network and the CCH and MediRegs Coding and Revenue Resource Center and Audit and Revenue Resource Center. In Coding Comply, click on the Search Code Sets tab, select an ICD-9 code set, select Add, Modified and/or Deleted from the Filter Actions and enter a start date of 10/01/2009.
