Are you looking for a short, yet comprehensive, source of training material for physicians regarding Medicare and Medicaid Fraud and Abuse? Look to the OIG.
“A Roadmap for New Physicians: Avoiding Medicare and Medicaid Fraud and Abuse” from the OIG is an excellent document specifically for you. It’s available in the Audit and Revenue Resource Center (ARRC) in the OIG folder when you Browse by Agency. This Physician Education piece provides a summary of the applicable compliance laws, such as the False Claims Act the Anti-Kickback Statute, Physician Self-Referral Law and the Exclusion Statute and the Civil Monetary Penalties Law. It details the role of proper coding in compliance, explains assignment issues with Medicare reimbursement, kickbacks and physician recruitment, and encourages the use of a solid compliance program in a physician practice. Don’t have access to the ARRC? The OIG website also contains the document, as well as the companion Power Point presentation and can be found at: http://www.oig.hhs.gov/compliance/physician-education/index.asp. This Power Point and the associated speaker notes is a graphically-oriented presentation, ready to present in a 50 to 60 minute format, which will simplify your compliance presentation assignment.
